October 18Oct 18 COLE WALKER(Chief Walker Posing in his office, 2026)Childhood and early lifeCole Walker was born on April 11th, 1984 on a family ranch near Odessa, TX. He was born into a working class family that had just enough to scrape by and relied on hard work and manual labor to earn their bread. Considering Cole was the oldest of his siblings, he would get to learn the values of labor and hard work long before he could understand it. Most of his days were spent mending fences, tending to the livestock and doing other chores around the family ranch. When it comes to school, Cole was never the one that shined. Although it was clear from the beginning that he was never going to be a great scientist or let alone a scientist, it was clear that his qualities laid elsewhere. He showed great leadership, athleticism and practical intelligence skills from his early ages. His grades usually ranged between A's and B's though as he never was fond of school nor did he have time to study after his chores. (Young Walker mending the fence on his family ranch, ca. 1996)Choosing his calling and events that led up to itCole was nearing his high school graduation when an event that would shape his entire life happened. What seemed like an ordinary day would turn his life around in a heartbeat. Cole was getting ready to leave for school on 11th September 2001 when he overheard the TV channel transmission. He froze in shock and stood in his living room just watching the TV with his family. He was expecting his father to shoo him away but it didn't happen, they all just watched. It was at this moment that Cole started feeling some sense of wrath or anger as chills went through his body. He was too young to do anything but he just knew he had to do it. Few months later after Cole finished his high School he was lined up to work as an apprentice in his uncle Wyatt's construction company. Instead of leaving to sign his apprenticeship contract, he stopped by the USMC recruitment office early morning and signed up. He never asked about bonuses, perks nor anything. He just wanted to go and do his part for his homeland. This decision was shunned upon by his family who deep down understood his decision but were afraid for his wellbeing.(Cole standing in front of USMC recruitment office)Military CareerUpon finishing his basic training Cole was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA. He was assigned to the 1st Marine Division where he served with pride and dedication. He was praised for his steady aim and calm presence which later led him to join the 1st Recon Battalion and earn his 0322 MOS. For what felt like decades to him, Cole would eagerly wait for his first deployment. After all he joined the USMC to bring the fight to the enemy but it felt like all he did the entire day was drills, digging up and pretending to fight. His wish came true very soon as he deployed to Iraq in 2003. They landed in Kuwait and proceeded to lead the recon for the rest of the 1st Division and scout ahead. For the next 20 days his team would fight their way towards Baghdad. Cole was deployed multiple times in following years and participated in one of the most notable battles of both Afghanistan and Iraq. HIs last deployment was in 2010 to Helmand Province in Afghanistan. During his military career Cole earned multiple awards and decorations before finally retiring in 2014.(C. Walker Overlooking Baghdad, April 2003)Family, Retirement and New CareerIn times between his deployments, Cole would often visit his hometown and nearby towns in Texas. On one such occasion Cole met his future wife Claire. Cole really liked her but he was unsure if their relationship will survive the nature of his career. Determined to try, Cole gave it a shot in hopes for the best. Although rough, bumpy and not so smooth, their relationship prevailed and Cole welcomed 2 daughters into the world during his deployment. This situation put a hard decision on Cole. For 12 years USMC was the only family he ever knew, but now he's become a father and there is another family that is totally depending on him. Cole knew he had to sacrifice one of those families and after a lot of thinking he decided that he is stepping out of USMC for good. He finished his last term contract and moved over to LS to start a new life with his family. He knew starting from the beginning at his age won't be easy but he saw an ad in the newspaper that firefighters are needed. Cole signed up and went to the academy, after finishing up he started working in the LSFD. Following his strong sense of duty and leadership skills, Cole would climb through the ranks fast. He reached the rank of Deputy Fire Chief in 2026 and after current chief stepping down he was chosen to be an acting Fire Chief. Although he had many hardships and hard times adjusting to the civilian life while balancing his work, family and education, Cole managed to prevail. Let's see where the fate takes him next!
